Many organizations have adopted a VoIP (Voice over IP) network infrastructure, or in some cases began a partial transition from traditional phone lines to IP, and thus are already reaping the 5 primary benefits of a unified communications strategy. A unified communications strategy involves the migration of primary business communication methods such as voice, data, video and fax from traditional analog phone lines onto an IP-based network, including the internet. Terms commonly used as a part of these unified communication migrations are VoIP (voice over IP) & FoIP (fax over IP).

Fax machines, fax servers and fax services continue to evolve towards a Fax over IP (FoIP) strategy, and FoIP will become the future of fax communications. As the Fax over IP (FoIP) industry matures, Fax over IP (FoIP) will become cheaper, faster, and easier to use, while dramatically enhancing consolidation and business continuance initiatives.

While there are thousands of sites and products dedicated to understanding voice transmission over an IP network (VoIP) and the internet, there are very few which discuss Fax over IP (FoIP). As a key fax server industry advocate, fax insider and reseller for 20 years, the goal of the "All About FoIP" website is to provide valuable information regarding Fax over IP (FoIP) for business executives and technology professionals to make well informed decisions.

Simply stated, Fax Over IP or FoIP (pronounced "Foyp") is all about fax delivery or receipt, where some portion of the transport occurs over IP networks.Technically stated, the term FoIP describes how to deliver fax documents (data) over IP networks, the surrounding protocols (T.37, T.38, SIP, H.323), transmission methods (Real Time, Store & Forward), PSTN to IP Gateways and/or VoIP phone Systems, and other fundamental components that help in the delivery of faxes over the internet ("internet faxing") and within your corporate intranet. Throughout the AllAboutFoIP website, you will hear about the topic from a variety of technical angles, industry partners, analysts, hardware and software vendors, white papers and more.

Finally, it is also important to note (although other industry experts may disagree), there are several other terms "somewhat" synonymous with FoIP, "VoIP fax" being the most common. VoIP fax is somewhat of a technical misnomer. VoIP (voice over IP) is designed to transmit voices over IP, and not faxes. FoIP (fax over IP) is designed for fax. VoIP and FoIP coexist. Other loose terms include IP Fax, VoIP Fax, Internet Fax, Online Fax and Enterprise Fax Over IP (eFoIP).

What dramatically differentiates FoIP technology from VoIP technology derives from the fact that faxes are already digital (black and white dots), and by definition a facsimile "is an EXACT copy or reproduction." By contrast, VoIP only needs to be audibly reproduced to get the job done, and thus not an exact replica. IP Faxing therefore needs to be quite resilient to preserve data without information loss, and at the same time smart enough to communicate with unsophisticated fax machines around the world. Fax machines generally do not understand the language of IP, and are subject to the effects of network jitter and latency that otherwise have no detrimental impact in today's VoIP calls. FoIP technology seeks to solve these problems so FoIP and VoIP can co-exist.
