A Note from the President – Fax Modernization

All the buzz is “fax modernized.”  Fax modernized is everywhere from Unified Communications to Cloud Computing to Microsoft Office 365.  1H-2011 illustrates that electronic fax defies knee-jerk perceptions, surprising exo-analysts like Frost & Sullivan, who abrubtly see what industry insiders like us have always known, that enterprise and traditional fax markets continue to grow and redefine themselves amidst global IT paradigm shifts.  Like the wheel, it was invented a long time ago and is still a damn good solution, constantly enjoying improvements.

What is Fax Modernized?

Fax modernized is a mature form of electronic document exchange.  It reigns as an undisputed front runner for compliance, cost-reduction and consolidation initiatives, and simply represents the evolution of faxing away from traditional fax machines towards evolving document exchange networks including multi-functional digital onramps (MFP Faxing), locally encrypted network attached scanners (Fujitsu 1800N-OTIS), and secure electronic document exchange, rarely originated or terminated as paper.  All the same, electronic document exchange still hangs its hat on proven, reliable and evolving secure transmission methods in the families of PSTN, Fax over IP (FoIP), http over SSL (https and https fax) and alternative modes of secure file transfer.

Fax servers generally boast the fastest ROI, lowest risk and highest success rate of most corporate technology adoptions.  Historically, fax servers have been firmly suited for business critical transactional document exchange, even as peripheral, anticipatorily more exciting and complex technologies (however misdirected in stated purpose) are created to share these responsibilities.  Ironically enough, the failure fall back strategy of many alternatives remain electronic fax.  Why?  Risk-averse businesses focused on the bottom line enjoy the power of simplicity - and its causal reliability - offered by fax technology.   Fax modernized trends are simply fueled by cost and consolidation efficiencies, while adapting to new technologies and infrastructures, including the worldwide IP network.

Fax modernized continues to compliment the Unified Communications (UC) trend with UC-Fax.  Microsoft, Cisco, other UC players, and voice-data service and integration providers (think ITSP’s, VoIP solutions, SIP Trunks, media gateways, session border controllers, etc) are acknowledging fax as significant business drivers for their organizations by clearly defining fax over IP implementation and support strategies.  Industry leading fax server vendors are energizing UC-Fax via their participation with developer networks, forums, UC conferences and more.

In the last 6 months the “Cloud” has dominated IT conversations.  Recent studies estimate two-thirds of IT admins report or plan use of Cloud Computing.  Complimentary to the Cloud movement are modernized fax solutions and services which support Cloud faxing, hosted fax solutions and SIP faxing, using one or more fax over IP implementation strategies including T.38 and a strong reliance on virtualization.  Cloud providers are retroactively mapping out new Cloud-based fax infrastructures and solutions which differ greatly from their VoIP offerings, increasing awareness to Cloud Fax Communications.

Recent events further validate fax modernization and have sparked the industry.  XmediusFax by SagemCom expands breadth and depth of Cisco integration at Cisco Live 2011 - potentially defining XmediusFax as a defacto Cisco solution; OpenText market leader setting a new bar with RightFax 10 also hosts its own Global Fax Summit; Retarus (Germany) making a strong bid to expand in the U.S. market with their leading enterprise messaging platform; EtherFax entering the market swiftly as an agnostic Cloud fax platform for multiple fax server solutions; and One Touch Integration Server (OTIS) 7.0 introduces next generation web and database services capabilities and deep RightFax integration.

Moving Forward

Today, AllAboutFoIP.com is a great looking glass for fax server, FoIP and emerging hosted and Cloud Fax technologies. As it continues to gain industry validity and search term popularity we are excited to share trends, needs and future market direction. AllAboutFoIP.com is confirming to me personally what we’ve always understood, the fax technology industry will be around for a while.  Fax’s unsung pioneers have established a foundation of depth and breadth across continents as we enter evolving markets and opportunities.  Expect the next 12 to 24 months energized with new solution creativity, while at the same time businesses of all sizes seek to refresh aging solutions, reduce costs and leverage the rapidly improving economies of virtualization, cloud offerings, VoIP and IP Telephony.  Finally, keep your eyes open over the next few years on industry consolidation and organizational shakeups; notably the fax industry has been very resilient and growing strong in a depressed economy, even having added several new players.

On a more personal note, special thanks to SagemCom and Retarus for becoming AllAboutFoIP sponsors and benefiting as leaders in the Fax over IP (FoIP), IP Fax and Cloud Fax space.
